Guest Blogger: Gin - Life As Topher's Mama

Hi friends!
Meet Gin, my new bloggy bff. She blogs over at Life As Topher's Mama.
Funny story about how I "met" Gin. I stumbled upon Life As Topher's Mama randomly, loved her blog and instantly became a follower. While I was reading her blog J looks over my shoulder and says, "She looks familiar." Turns out J and Gin went to high school together and stayed in touch through college. Small world blogosphere, huh?

I asked Gin to guest blog for a few reasons. Having lived here in the country for a while now I think about how lucky those that grew up in the country really are. I really believe people that grew up in the country (and live on ranches/farms) learn values that us "city kids" don't.

Gin grew up in the country and has now made the switch to the city life, but she has taken what she's learned with her. She has a kindness about her that is genuine and I am so glad our paths have crossed.

She blogs about being a teacher, a mama and boy, can she craft! She is clever and creative and she's pretty darn funny too!

Here's Gin!

1.) What is your elevator speech? In this case, the building is 3 stories high.
I'm gin.
I am married to Matt who I love and adore and cherish.  I am mama to Topher who is my pride and joy, my treasure, my prize.  I'm a girl who has a smile for everyone, who is always optimistic, who looks for the good in everyone and who is rather unorganized and forgetful.  Reading and writing light my fire and I fell into crafting accidentally, turns out it's a hobby I truly enjoy.

2.) Growing up around livestock what did you learn that you wouldn’t have had you not grown up on a ranch?
I love this question.
I learned it's not a good idea to run up behind a horse.
I learned baby calves love their morning bottle just as much as real babies do.
I learned a herd dog is not for playing, no matter how big and sweet and cuddly they are.
I learned opening a gate is an art that should not be taken for granted.
I learned that a hell hath no fury like a pissed off heifer.
I learned that shearing sheep is necessary, no matter how mean it looks.
I learned that drenching goats is also necessary, no matter how mean it looks.
I learned that whistling while a bull is in a trailer is NOT a good idea.
I learned that riding in the back of the pickup while feeding the livestock is so much fun.
I learned that goats will not try to cross a cattle guard but a sheep will always try, no matter how many times their poor legs fall through.
I learned you never touch a snake.
I learned that jumping on hay bales is equal to any ride at a theme park; it's even more fun if you have your cousins with you.
I learned that hopping a barbed wire fence never leads you anywhere good.
I learned that playing in the oats will lead to hives and wheezing.
I learned that riding in a tractor with your uncle is an experience unlike any other.

3.) Can you imagine moving back to the country? Why or why not?
I can imagine moving back to a rural town, like B-town, but never again the deep country like the ranch.  Matt would not flourish in such a rural setting; he's a city boy through and through.  And that's okay; we are immensely happy where we are.

4.) If yes, what would you raise/grow on your ranch or farm?
If I could go back to ranch life, I would raise what I (kind of) know: cattle.  I'd also like to bring back the huge vegetable garden my grandma had back in the late '80s.  She had potatoes, green beans, carrots, you name it, she grew it.

5.) How do you support your local farming and ranching industry?
When we can, we go to the local farmer's market on Saturdays and buy our produce.

6.) What would be the title of your memoir? Why?
It would be one word: "Smile"  I very rarely pass someone by, be it someone I know or a stranger, without smiling at them.

7.) What is your favorite thing about blogging?
Blogging feeds my need to write and share.  Through this community I've found so many people like me, so many great ideas and so many cool people who I would love to meet in real life, such as you!

That was fun! Thanks for guest blogging Gin and thanks for the "heads up" on some of your lessons learned!

You will love everything about Gin at Life As Topher's Mama.
Head on over there and you'll see what I'm talking about!

With a little help from a friend...

I barely made the deadline to apply for a hunting license.

By barely, I mean 30 minutes before the clock struck midnight barely. My friend Kennie called and said, "Just calling to remind you today is the last day to apply for a license". Say WHAT?! I guess I figured I would be getting an email, phone call or I'd see it in the paper.

Apparently the DOW doesn't advertise things like that.

I have no idea what season I applied for but I do know I applied for an Elk tag because Kennie told me I did. :)

After I submitted the application J said, "Well, what will you shoot?" I replied, "My 22. The same gun I go prairie dog shooting with." He laughed. Apparently you need a bigger gun to kill an Elk.

Whatever.

Don't worry, I'm being honest with myself. The chances of getting picked in the draw are slim to none. If I do get lucky and actually get a license the chances of seeing an Elk are even more slim. Let's take this even further and say that even if I get a tag and see an Elk the likelihood of being able to actually pull the trigger.... you get the picture.

I figure if I do get lucky, but don't get see and catch shoot an Elk I'll get one heckuva workout hiking those mountains, it's a win-win!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . .
This post has been sitting as a DRAFT in my Blogger Dashboard for months. I don't know what I was waiting for to hit PUBLISH, but since writing the first half I've received the Draw Results.

Drumroll, please.

I was successful in the Big Game Limited License Draw Results! I have no idea what the hell that means, but I know I got an Elk tag! I also know it's a private land tag so this means I can sit in our "backyard" and wait for an Elk to come to me. Hopefully.
NO HIKING REQUIRED!

Ladies and gents, be sure to wear your hunter orange this season because this city girl is a-goin' huntin!
Still dreaming big...
You can read about my first steps before applying for an Elk tag by taking my Hunter Safety class  here and here. There is a gun wound involved. ;)

June is a good month.

What a wonderful month this is going to be! Let me give you a few reasons why.

Summer is here!
The lambs are looking strong and healthy and our feed is nice and green.
Vegetables have been planted in my first garden. (With the help of my green thumb mother-in-law.)
We've booked our summer trip to Mexico. Yippee!
My mom is booking her tickets to visit me next month. Double Yippee!
My sister-in-law, her husband and my nephew will be here in a few weeks.
Morgan and his girlfriend are coming back for a visit this month.
My best friend shared with me the most wonderful news a few days ago.
AND I am celebrating 2 years of marriage today ya'll!

I love that our wedding day remains to be the happiest day of our lives. J and I often talk about all the fun we had and how wonderful that day was.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from our wedding day.

Here we are, two years later living in J's hometown tending to hundreds of sheep and most importantly, we are happy.
Now, it's your turn. What is going to make June a wonderful month for you?

I Choose Moo and Happy Friday.

Let's face it, we all have a little green monster deep inside us somewhere, but the gal in this news story is nuts! Jealous of a baby calf? Really?

Have a marvelous weekend my friends!

And remember, when the little green monster starts to rear its ugly head - back away from the kitchen knives!

Here's to another great weekend!

This post is a little late. It was a busy week!

What a wonderful and relaxing weekend we had last week.

This time of year things slow down for a little while so it's a perfect time to garden. Most all the sheep have delivered (except for about 5) and majority of the sheep and their babies are up at the windmill.

Friday I began tending to my very first garden! J's mom and sister made these garden beds last year and I'm excited to use them this year!

My mother-in-law is quite the gardener so when she mentioned starting a garden at our place I was a little intimidated. After pulling all the weeds and tilling the garden it seems like I might be able to handle it.

I also mowed a lawn for the first time in my life. How funny is it that I mow my first lawn while living on a SHEEP ranch? Why not let the sheep eat it, right? Well, apparently they are picky eaters and don't like the long grass that was filling up our yard. We'll keep them in the yard now that it's at a nice length for them.

Another fun thing that happened is J's vines arrived!

He has planted a (very small) vineyard. How fun is that?!
Jigs is pretty excited.  Even though we will keep her far, far away from the grapes when the vines start to raisin.
I think it will be great hobby for him. How he will find the time to tend to these vines, I have not a clue.
How he will keep the pain-in-the-butt goats from eating them, not a clue about that either. Just today he told me the sheep trampled all over them. oops! We are off to a great start.

Also, this past Friday evening we had surprise visitors! Our good friends, Lisa and Thor (yes, that is his real name) drove down from the Boulder area for the weekend! Apparently everyone knew and they wanted to surprise me so when I heard knocking in the middle of the night I was a little taken back.

Good thing I don't sleep with a loaded gun by my bed. ;)

We did some shooting out in the back, spent some time on our good friend's houseboat and celebrated a birthday.  We had a delicious breakfast at the new diner in town and enjoyed a few cold drinks.
This is Thor. Yes, he is pretty bad a**.
This is Lisa (and Jigs).
I've said it before and I'll say it again...we have some pretty awesome friends in our life.

Here's to another great weekend! What are your plans this weekend?
